David Parratt is a Senior Consultant with IF ONLY. He qualified as an Advocate in Scotland in 1999, was admitted to the Bar of the DIFC in 2007 and qualified as a Barrister-at-Law (Lincoln’s Inn) in England and Wales in 2009. He has a first degree in law (LLB (Hons)) as well as a Doctorate (PhD) in Civil Procedure and Pleadings from the University of Edinburgh.
He has been an Honorary Lecturer in Dispute Resolution in the CEPMLP (Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy) in the University of Dundee (2007-11) and is presently an Honorary Research Fellow in International Commercial Law and Arbitration in the School of Law teaching the LLM (Distance Learning) Degree in International Dispute Resolution in the School of Law, University of Dundee. He also has an academic position as an honorary Lecturer in International Arbitration and Construction law in the British University in Dubai.
His arbitration experience and expertise is recognised worldwide. He has participated as counsel in ICC, LCIA, DIAC and English & English domestic arbitrations and has been appointed as arbitrator twice. He is a Chartered Arbitrator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). He is a CEDR accredited mediator. He is also a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators, a supporting member of LMAA and a panel member of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Hong Kong Arbitration Center (HKIAC), the Cairo Regional Center, (CRCICA), the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre, (KLRCA) and both the Dubai International Arbitration Center (DIAC) and the Dubai Finance Center (DIFC).
He is a member of Terra Firma Chambers, Parliament House, Edinburgh and an associate member of Crown Office Chambers, Temple, London. He works primarily in private practice. He has considerable experience in construction and civil engineering disputes, and in the utility, oil and gas and general infrastructure fields. A main plank of his practice is in commercial disputes and in particular contractual claims and defences as well as all forms of arbitration.
He has considerable training experience having trained in both public and in-house courses, in the region of 1500 delegates in the last 6 years over 4 continents in 17 countries. His specialities in training are in international contracts, international trade and international oil and gas contracts.
